Concept Maps

Unlike other brainstorming methods, concept mapping helps students visualize ideas and make connections that can help them understand and retain information. This graphical tool can be used by individuals or in groups to organize ideas and create plans, and research has shown it is especially useful for visual learners.

Concept maps are similar to mind maps, but have a hierarchical structure that allows you to see the relationships between ideas and concepts, with one main idea or focus question at the top of the map and sub-topics and key terms branching off from it. The arrows and lines connecting these ideas indicate the relationship between them.

This 5th Australian and New Zealand edition enables every student to master introductory psychology through proven pedagogy, meaningful ‘tales from the front’ videos with practicing psychologists, instructive interactives and Concept Check questions, and a strong focus on psychological science. It also ensures that students learn how to obtain psychological knowledge through its explicit discussion of the scientific method, with chapter 2 devoted entirely to research methods.

Concept Summaries

The book’s clear and concise chapter outlines and concept maps help students understand the big picture of each topic. Concept summaries at the end of each chapter highlight the key concepts from that chapter to reinforce learning.

This edition includes updates that reflect the continuing evolution of health psychology. For example, the section on colourectal cancer screening has been updated to include research on anticipated regret and screening behaviours, and the chapter on drug misuse now includes information about e-cigarette use.

A renewed emphasis on the role of culture in psychological theory and research is reflected throughout, with an extended discussion of the way that biological and neural under pinnings intersect with cultural experience. The focus on culture also extends to the inclusion of’Spotlight on Canadian Research’ feature boxes that bring attention to the work being done by researchers across the country in this field.

A new chapter on statistical principles demonstrates how to apply the principles of statistics to the interpretation of research. It is designed to engage and inspire students, making the often-daunting subject of statistics accessible to all students.

Making Connections

In keeping with the latest developments in psychology, this edition has increased its focus on the neurological underpinnings of psychological behaviour. Neuroplasticity content is integrated throughout the book, while a focus on cultural influences has been maintained. Special features, such as From brain to behaviour and A global vista, illustrate and link material so that students can see the threads that tie different chapters together.

Based on feedback from lecturers and research, conceptual summaries are now distributed throughout each chapter, highlighting key concepts that are likely to be retained by students. Further, the inclusion of an ethical dilemma at the end of each chapter reflects the APS code of ethics.

Offering a unique combination of proven pedagogy, meaningful ‘tales from the front’ videos with practicing psychologists and a range of effective supporting materials, this fully Australian and New Zealand edition of Psychology enables every introductory psychology student to master basic concepts. The book has been reorganized and streamlined to focus squarely on ethical decision-making models and principles, and includes multiple new chapters that reflect the latest developments in counseling specialty areas. It also features an overview of ethical treatment of value conflicts.

Ethical conflicts are inherent in the practice of psychotherapy and psychiatry. The author explores these conflicts and their implications in the context of selected literary depictions of psychotherapy. It also emphasizes the importance of integrating theory and practice to enhance students’ ability to become proficient in the practice of counseling and psychotherapy. Therapy Challenges: When Psychology Doesn’t WorkTherapy Challenges: When Psychology Doesn’t Work

When Psychology Doesn’t Work

Many people come to see a psychologist with the hope that they will receive quick relief from their symptoms. However, this is not always the case.

Sometimes, a person’s misconceptions about therapy can sabotage the process. This can result in a negative self-fulfilling prophecy. In other cases, the person may have simply misunderstood how it works.

1. You don’t feel comfortable with your therapist

Sometimes, you and your therapist just aren’t the best match. It can feel like a break-up but unlike the dating world, a therapist won’t take it personally and they’ll want to figure out what went wrong so they can help you find someone who is a better fit.

If you’re not comfortable, it could mean they’re pushing you too hard or asking too many personal questions. But it could also mean they don’t understand you or your problems. That’s a major red flag and could be a sign that they aren’t the right therapist for you.

It’s important to remember that therapy is, at its core, a relationship. And just like other relationships in your life, it can take time to get to know someone and build trust. So don’t give up too soon! There are plenty of other therapists out there who may be a better fit for you.

2. You don’t feel like you’re making progress

It can be frustrating when you feel like you’re doing all the right things and yet nothing seems to be working. This can especially be true when you’re dealing with a mental health issue, such as anxiety or depression. Sometimes it can take a while for the treatments you’re using to start making a difference, and it’s common to experience setbacks. If you’re feeling like you’re not making progress, talk to your therapist about it. It’s possible that a change in treatment approach or a different medication could make all the difference. Don’t give up! You’re closer than you think.

3. You’re not getting the results you want

Many people go to a psychologist hoping to find quick fixes for emotional problems like depression or anxiety. They may be tempted by the idea that a pill could help them feel better. But primary care physicians or nurse practitioners are usually trained to prescribe medication and do not have the time or training to provide psychotherapy.

The field of psychology has been rocked by a number of high-profile controversies over impossible effects like precognition and the failure to replicate many published psychological experiments. These controversies have highlighted the need to better understand what proportion of results in psychology are reliable.

If you’re not getting the results you want from your treatment, it’s important to be honest with your psychologist and ask them to try something else. Psychologists take confidentiality seriously, so they will respect your decision and refer you to another therapist.

4. You don’t feel like you’re making progress

Even if you don’t feel like your psychologist is helping you at all, don’t give up! Sometimes it takes a long time to begin feeling better, and it’s important that you continue to see your psychologist and work through the process. If you are still struggling after a few sessions, be sure to bring it up with your therapist. They may recommend a different treatment approach or offer additional support.

It’s also common to feel that you’re making progress, but then a big obstacle appears out of nowhere. Strong emotions and past behaviors can resurface, causing you to lose the gains that you’ve made. This is completely normal, and it’s not your fault if this happens to you. This is a common part of the therapeutic process, and it’s often necessary in order to get to the bottom of the problem. Eventually, this will pass, and you’ll be back to feeling good! Keep up the good work, and don’t be afraid to speak up if you need extra support!
